One of the most common questions I hear before a session is simple:
“What should I wear?”
And honestly, it matters more than people think.
The right outfit helps you feel confident, comfortable, and polished. The goal is not to look trendy or overstyled. The goal is to look like the best version of yourself.
Here’s how to choose outfits that photograph beautifully for professional headshots and branding sessions.
Solid colors photograph best because they keep attention on your face.
Great options include:
Soft blues
Creams and neutrals
Earth tones
Classic black, navy or jewel tones
Avoid tiny patterns, logos or busy prints, which can distract in photos.
Tailoring matters more than price.
Clothing that fits properly instantly looks more professional on camera. Avoid anything overly loose or overly tight. Structured layers like blazers, sweaters, or jackets photograph especially well because they add shape.
Your wardrobe should match how you want clients to perceive you.
Realtors and entrepreneurs often choose polished but approachable looks. Creative professionals may lean slightly more relaxed. Corporate professionals may prefer classic and structured.
There is no single correct outfit. The right choice supports your brand.
I always recommend bringing two to three outfit choices to your session.
We can quickly adjust based on lighting, backgrounds, and how each look photographs. Small changes can completely shift the feel of your images.
Jewelry and accessories should complement, not compete.
Classic pieces work best. Avoid anything noisy, reflective, or overly trendy that may date your photos quickly.
Professional hair and makeup are always welcome but not required.
The most important thing is that you feel like yourself. Slightly more polish than everyday makeup photographs beautifully without looking overdone.
Before every session, I help clients plan wardrobe choices so nothing feels stressful or uncertain. The goal is for you to arrive feeling prepared and confident.
Your headshot should feel authentic, modern, and timeless.
If you’re planning updated headshots or branding photos in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, I would love to help you create images that truly represent you.
